Navigating Internet Options in Older Buildings
If you’re living in an older property, like those built in the 1960s, you might be familiar with the challenges of securing reliable broadband without relying on outdated infrastructure. For many, especially those in blocks of flats, the struggle with slow download speeds and frequent dropouts is all too real. The copper networks that were the backbone of communication infrastructure back then are now a bottleneck for modern internet needs.
Challenges with Traditional ISPs
Living in a building with over 25 units, all connected through antiquated copper lines, can severely limit your internet experience. Many Internet Service Providers (ISPs) still depend on pre-installed British Telecom (BT) lines, which exacerbate these connectivity issues. This reliance on old infrastructure often leads to dissatisfaction among residents, prompting a search for alternatives.
Exploring Broadband Alternatives
In an effort to bypass these limitations, I explored ISPs that offer connections via coaxial cables, rather than the traditional Asymmetric Digital Subscriber Line (ADSL). This search led me to Direct Save Telecom, a provider that utilizes the Virgin Media Network to deliver broadband services.
The Direct Save Telecom Experience
Direct Save Telecom initially offered an appealing package with a quick installation at a competitive price for a 24-month contract. However, I soon discovered drawbacks to using a middleman ISP. The primary issue was the limited support, as Direct Save Telecom relies on Virgin Media for network issues, resulting in delayed resolutions.
Additionally, the service involved the installation of a business connection, even for residential requests. This means a business-class router, like the HITRON CGNV4-BIZ, is installed. While it can deliver high-speed broadband, the standard router may not be optimal for residential wireless needs.
Cost and Performance Concerns
Initially, I was paying nearly £60 a month for a 1GB connection. However, post-contract, the speeds dropped significantly to 150-200 Mbps, without a corresponding reduction in price, prompting my decision to leave Direct Save Telecom.
A New Hope with Starlink
In my quest for a more reliable ISP, I discovered Starlink. This service uses a vast network of low Earth orbit (LEO) satellites to provide internet, bypassing traditional ground-based infrastructure entirely. This innovative approach caught my attention, and I decided to order the Starlink kit.
Awaiting Starlink
I am currently awaiting the delivery of the Starlink kit and look forward to testing it. Once installed, I plan to report back on the speeds, installation process, and any potential network issues.
